Sayeedi is an Islamic scholar, politician, lecturer and chief of the the Jamaat-e-Islami, which is the largest Islamist political party in Bangladesh. From 1996 up to 2008, he was a member of the National Assembly of Bangladesh; he also served as Member of Parliament in 1996 and 2001. In 2009 Sayeedi was put on trial accused of committing war crimes during the Bangladeshi war of independence in 1971. He was handed a death sentence in 2013, a decision which led to violent protests. Many international observers criticized the impartiality of the trial, declaring it to be politically motivated.
